Artisan Antiques has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
The entire silver artwork has been formed by a "cast-silver" process in which the very accurate, detailed and intricate figures of a mermaid, merman and the giant clamshell on top have been meticulously sculpted.
Starting with the base, four applied-cast 'tulip shells' support the circular and raised platform.

A particularly noteworthy area of detail is the impressive "sea spume" (the foam created by crashing waves) decoration on which the mermaids rest.
The figures are magnificently sculpted and displayed to all angles with all sorts of curves, shadows and details created by the fine engravings and chased detailing of their hair, facial feature and scales.

On top lies a giant clam shell bowl/tazza that presents the incredible artistry and finesse of Victorian craftsmanship with a flawless design and an impressive amount of detailing on the shell's exterior. The interior allows for sweets, berries, flowers or a creative item of your choice to be held within.

A full set of English hallmarks are clearly marked on the base.
We would like to present the opportunity for the uncompromising collector to acquire this one of a kind silver figural centrepiece. With the overall artistic design, practical size and useability, this article would grace a magnificent interior decor adding an indulging and luxurious ambience of fine Victorian silverware.
