A Fine Quality 8 Day English Fusee Timepiece Trunk Dial Wall Clock by James Hargraves of Bawtry Circa 1820

Description

A fine quality 8 day English fusee timepiece trunk dial wall clock by James Hargraves of Bawtry circa 1820.

James Hargraves (sometimes Hargreaves) was born in 1768 and married Sarah Hibbard in 1797. He was established in Bawtry, (in South Yorkshire on the Great North Road) by 1807, and in premises in Swan Lane in 1822. He died in 1835.

An impressive trunk dial wall timepiece by James Hargraves of Bawtry circa 1820.

The flame mahogany veneered case with satinwood crossbanding to the front panel and further inlaid with ebony stringing.

The substantial cast brass moulded bezel with the original integral lock, which retains some of its original gilding and the original convex glass .

The well-proportioned case with a narrow mahogany dial surround, shaped mahogany ears to the case sides and curved bottom drop box with opening pendulum access door retaining its original lock and key.

The original mahogany veneered oak carcass back box with opening side door and the original fastening pegs, all in excellent original condition and of good colour and patination.

The 12" convex painted wooden white dial with a Roman chapter ring and signed to the centre, James Hargraves Bawtry.

The dial is in excellent original condition with a fine quality original white ground and crisp black work numerals.

The fully restored 8 day timepiece fusee movement is of excellent quality, with tall shaped plates and heavily knopped pillars.

The original anchor escapement and the original engraved brass bob pendulum with brass strap.

Brass butterfly fusee winding key.

The dial is fronted by the original matching brass spade design hands.

An excellent quality clock in fine original condition throughout with the movement fully restored.
