Victorian Silver Gilt Sugar Sifter Spoon 'Diana the Huntress' Figure - Francis Higgins 1854

19th century
Description

We are delighted to offer this highly collectable and rare solid silver sugar sifter spoon made during the Victorian era by silversmith Francis Higgins of London in 1854.

The entire spoon features a heavily decorated and chased design of acanthus leaves and scrolls with a gilded surface.

The handle of the spoon is in the figure of Diana the Huntress with her dog by her right side and a bow on the left.

Diana is considered a Roman goddess with a notable oil on canvas painting titled "Diana the Huntress" painted by an anonymous artist of the School of Fontainebleau c1550. The painting was acquired by the Louvre Museum in 1840 and is displayed there currently.

The opposite end of the spoon features a finely cast silver sifter in the form of a large acanthus leaf which allows for sugar to be sprinkled onto a dessert of your choice.

The spoon is fully hallmarked on the reverse side of the spoon.

Needless to say, this spoon presents a unique and desirable array of features for collectors of figural silverware.

Additionally, one may look beyond its sole purpose as silver flatware and view this set as more of an artistic and sculpture-work approach with the finest craftsmanship and detailing being utilised to achieve such exemplary finesse in a Victorian sugar sifter.
