A Georgian Solid Silver Gilt Snuff Box with Spectacular Fox Hunting Scene - Edward Smith 1832

Description

We are delighted to be able to offer this magnificent silver-gilt heavy snuff box, made by silversmith Edward Smith in Birmingham, 1832.

The highlight of the box is presented boldly on the lid with a magnificent hunting scene with an array of detailed features such as the background trees, fence and the two hounds chasing down the fox in the foreground.

Additional decorations include the very precise and accenting chased sides featuring a floral design.

The base of the box features a classic Georgian engine-turned pattern with a blank cartouche in the centre.

The interior is further gilded and some mild scratching is present as with patina due to the antique nature of this box.

The quality of the box is further apparent by feeling its heavyweight construction (150g) in addition to the smooth hinge and lid that has a perfect closure.

The box is fully hallmarked with the maker's mark, date mark (1832), silver lion, Georgian head and the Birmingham assay mark.
