Early Victorian Rosewood Trumpet Worktable C1860

19th century
Description

An early Victorian rosewood trumpet shape worktable dating to c1860. The octagonal top has an decorative carved frieze above the octagonal workbox which sweeps down to an ornate and scrolled tripod base on castors. The interior contains 24 different sized compartments for sewing items, including a needle case, 4 pincushions and a crochet keeper. The compartments and central trumpet are lined with the original green and gold paper. And the central lid and other lids and cushions are covered in the original emerald green soft silk. The central lid has a silver plated handle. There is a lock but no key. The condition, colour and patina of the rosewood structure are excellent - the only shortcoming is an old ink stain in the silk on the central lid. The condition of the interior is remarkable for the age, the silk and paper are undamaged and show up the brilliant original colours.
