A fascinating coloured aquatint depicting The Tottenham Court Road Turnpike as it appeared during the English Regency.
The Turnpike was found at the northern boundary of early nineteenth century London.
It was on The Hampstead Road, just north of Tottenham Court Road and east of Regentís Park.
Beyond it lay open countryside and the popular road north to Hampstead and Highgate, in those days rustic satellites of London.
A busy scene with a flock of sheep and a cow being driven down the middle of the road, figures on pavement in left foreground including a milkmaid carrying pails.
The turnpike gate can be seen beyond and to the right is the neo-classically inspired St Jamesís Chapel, demolished in 1964.
After George Moreland and published by Rudolph Ackermann for his periodical 'The Repository of Arts' 1812.
In a very good clean state with bright and vibrant colour.
Within a period black and gilt wood decorated frame with rope twist back edge and beaded detail at sight edge, in verre eglomise.
Both frame and engraving are in first class condition.
