Circa 1830'S English Rococo Style Dessert Service

19th century
For Sale by TJR Trading
Description

This is a circa 1830's English rococo style dessert service comprising of two twin handled dishes and three single handled dishes. The decoration is by green transfer print, overpainted by hand.

They are decorated with foliate designs, picked out with gilding. The dishes have undulating edges, and the handles are of scrolling form with pierced detail.

They have a green painter's mark to the underside.

The condition is generally quite poor and each piece has faults. The photographs should provide a good illustration of condition. One dish has been broken and had an old stapled repair. There is discolouration to the glazes, having turned brown in some areas. There is a piece missing from one of the handles. There are various hairline cracks and some crazing. There is a chip to a foot rim. There is wear to the gilding and the enamel.

The twin handled dishes are 5.5cm high, 26.2cm wide and 21cm deep.

The single handled dishes are 5cm high, 23cm wide and 20.7cm deep.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Rococo Revival style of the 1830s features ornate, asymmetrical shapes, molded scrollwork, pierced handles, and elaborate hand-painted decoration. Ceramic pieces from this period frequently depict naturalistic botanical motifs, foliage, and heavy gold leaf embellishments inspired by 18th-century French design.

These pieces were typically made from soft-paste porcelain, bone china, or fine earthenware with an overglaze finish. Decoration was applied using hand-painted enamel pigments and mercury gilding before a final firing to set the colours.

Authentic pieces often exhibit fine hand-painted pattern numbers on the underside, faint pottery maker marks, or impressed letters. Look for natural wear on high-friction areas such as the gilded rims, as well as distinct weight, translucent glaze qualities, and slight hand-painted variations across matching pieces.

Arrange the dishes symmetrically across a wooden dining sideboard, place them inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or mount them as a wall collection in a dining space. Their decorative shape and leaf patterns also make them suitable as central table display pieces.

Hand wash gently in lukewarm water using a soft sponge and mild washing-up liquid. Avoid dishwashers, harsh chemicals, and abrasive pads, as these will erode hand-painted enamel details and gilded rims over time.
