Description
Henry Harris painted this view several times in the late 19th and early 20th Century and this one is very well executed with some really good attention to detail. The fisherman has his wicker creel beside him and two cows are at the water's edge, while a couple of figures are crossing the bridge. Henry is very well known as a Bristol artist and many of his works are either in or near this locality. It is in excellent condition, in its original frame. His father William Harris was a Miller and had a large family, 15 sons in all. In 1862 the family moved to Bristol. After starting his artistic career as a self-employed painter and interior decorator, Henry took up painting as a full-time occupation in 1875. He married Barbara Ellen Sweet on February 1st 1872 at St.Mary Redcliffe, Bristol. They lived in St. Mark's, Easton from around 1880 and had 8 children there. He worked both in oil and watercolour and specialised in landscape and river scenes, very often including cattle and bridges. He loved to sketch around his home in Stapleton, Bristol, particularly Snuff Mills. His paintings were sold usually directly to clients, not through a gallery and he was regularly commissioned to paint. He died on April 23rd 1926, aged 74, Internal Ref: 157/20
