Silver Horse Hoof Inkwell & Snuff Box. Countess Vincet Veritas. 1868.

19th century
Description

This fabulous Victorian inkwell and snuff box desk set which was crafted using the hoofs of someone's beloved horse are both fitted with hinged silver tops which are fully hallmarked for silversmiths Daniel Wellby & John Henry Wellby, London, 1868.

These hoofs are fitted with their original horseshoes and the silver lids were engraved with the crest of an eagle, the Latin motto of Vincet Veritas and Countess which would have been the name of the horse.

The inkwell comes complete with it's fitted glass inkwell and the snuff box has a nice gilded interior.

This handsome set of inkwell and snuff box which are unusual having been mounted high up the leg and retaining the horses hair are a wonderful example of taxidermy which are in such beautiful original condition and look as though they were lovingly cared for. They will look fabulous on display in a home office or just in the home and make great talking pieces.

Hallmarks: Fully hallmarked with Lion for sterling silver. Queen Victoria's head. Leopard's head for London. Date letter n for 1868. Maker's mark for Daniel Wellby & John Wellby.

Dimensions of each: 14 cm (5 1/2") Deep. 10 cm (4") Wide. 12 cm (4 1/2") High.

Weight: 1420 g total for the 2.

Condition: Excellent used antique condition with only light signs of use in keeping with age. Silver in very good condition with only very light surface scratches and a little tarnish. No cracks, breaks or damage. The lids stay closed fine but do not quite sit flush.
