Description
From THE largest range of writing boxes and jewellery boxes available on this website. Not many combination boxes of this style come along and even fewer with the degree of original features as this example. Made during the early Victorian period (possibly earlier). Mahogany veneered with brass edging to the top and front. Inlaid cartouche. Lid closes square and true. Opens to reveal a fine interior with a large degree of original features. Gilt embossed panel to the lid interior that folds forward to provide access to what would have once been a removable mirror, the recess now being useful for a few documents or perhaps favourite photographs. The base section comprises of 9 sections of various sizes. The 3 rosewood veneered lids complete with the original finely turned wooden knobs are original, they are slightly bowed as is often the case but still fit well. The velvet section has probably been recovered, the central leather section would have once retained various manicure items. The base of the tray is lined with leather that is an extremely good match to the leather on the panel. All of the dividers are original and complete. There is a brass locking rod to the right of the lock that when withdrawn allows a writing box to be removed. Though combination boxes often have writing boxes it is quite unusual to find the likes of such a depth on a box of this style/dimensions with 2 rather than 1 storage area beneath the writing platform. Once again the box is veneered with mahogany to the exterior and rosewood to the interior Once again the lids are slightly bowed but that is of little consequence. Genuine antique inkpot. There can be no disputing that the leather writing surface is original as it is a perfect match to the panel to the lid interior. The condition of the leather throughout is exceptional. All brassware throughout (bar the locking rod) is original and complete, and a replacement working key is supplied. There was more than likely 4 small jars in the tray and these would be quite easy to source. The top section would serve well as a jewellery box. If more convenient the velvet section could simply be lifted out and along with the lids could be stored in one of the two storage sections beneath the writing surface (please see photographs). A very fine looking box, practical for modern day use, displays well and always good to come across something a little different with such a large degree of original features in such condition.
