Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to a historical process discovered in 1742 where a thick layer of sterling silver was fused onto a copper ingot before being rolled into sheets. This technique predated electroplating and produced durable silver-surfaced items throughout the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Antique warming dishes feature a double-walled reservoir designed to hold hot water beneath the upper serving insert. Cast side handles allowed for transport, while raised feet elevated the hot vessel from delicate wooden table surfaces.

Authentic pieces often show hints of copper bleeding through areas of high wear, known as bleeding. They also feature turned-over silver edges designed to conceal the copper core and lack electroplating assay hallmarks.

Position silver warming dishes on a dining sideboard, buffet table, or kitchen island to serve as structured table accessories. They can also be displayed open on open dressers to highlight early metalwork design.

Maintain Old Sheffield Plate by dusting with a soft cotton cloth and applying non-abrasive silver polish sparingly. Avoid harsh chemical dips or aggressive scrubbing, which can strip the thin silver layer and expose the copper beneath.
