Large Vintage Hand Painted Sign "Privileged Altar"

1900 - 1920
Description

A delightful large antique hand painted sign in Latin "Altare Privilegiatum" meaning Privileged Altar. This was an altar in a Roman Catholic church where a plenary indulgence could be applied in favour of a soul in purgatory by the priest celebrating Mass whenever Mass was celebrated there. Nicely worn with wonderful colours and calligraphy. Very imposing at 304cm in length or ten feet. An interesting and highly decorative piece of period signage.
