Pair of Benin Bronze Heads

1920 - 1940
Description

A Lovely pair of Benin Bronze heads. Benin art is a royal art made to glorify the king, or Oba. They are considered to have divine ancestry and the heads were kept on altars. The casters guild worked primarily for the monarchy, and has been in existence since the fifteenth or sixteenth century. Benin castings were all made by the lost-wax technique, which produces one-of-a-kind pieces. Although the works generally are called Benin Bronzes, they are made of different materials. Some are made of brass, which metallurgical analysis has shown to be an alloy of copper, zinc, and lead in various proportions. Standing at 40cm's this pair have an amazing life like presence along with a wonderful colour. We are dating them to the early to mid 1900s.
