Description

A Good Jaques Weighted Boxwood & Ebony Staunton Chess Set, circa 1937

the chessmen with green baizes to the underside, both kings stamped JAQUES LONDON in red along the rim of the bases in a box with an inlaid brass inset, divided compartment and green label marked: GENUINE STAUNTON CHESSMEN....Facsimile signature of Howard Staunton, J. JAQUES & SON LTD., LONDON, ENGLAND (with key).

King: 11.3cm high (just under 4 1/2 inches), base diameter: 5.1cm

Pawn: 6cm high, base diameter: 3.6cm.

Box: 23cm wide, 18cm deep, 11.5cm high.

Provenance: Purchased from Garrick Coleman Antiques, November 2014.

Reference: Please see Sir Alan Fersht's 'Jaques and British Chess Company Chess Sets', Second Edition, page 11 (Figure 53) for an identical label on a set presented to R. J. Broadbent, 1937.

Condition: Hairline crack to the collar of one boxwood pawn, a few small stains and 'dents' to box Green Label. Otherwise excellent. Comes with key.
