A beautiful stipple engraving depicting the romantic tale of Eloisa and Abelard.
Eloisa (or Heloise) in flowing white robes sits at a desk and turns her head away from a letter that she is reading inscribed 'Abelard' with an expression of despair.
In 12th century Paris Eloisa was a bright and gifted student. She fell deeply in love with her philosopher tutor Abelard. Soon Eloisa was pregnant.
A scandal was imminent, so the couple fled, they married and had a son.
The dishonour was such that Eloisa and Abelard ultimately took holy orders as a monk and nun and were separated for ever.
There loving relationship lives on however through their correspondence, Eloise occupies an important place in French literary history and in the development of feminine representation.
They were interred together in the Pére Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
Engraved by William Wynne Ryland (1732 – 1783) after a painting by the female neo-classical and decorative artist Angelica Kauffman (1741 – 1807) who specialised in the depiction of classical heroines. Published in Georgian London in 1779.
William Ryland was a prodigious talent as an engraver, however, he unfortunately tried his hand at forgery and came to a sticky end. He forged some false bills and attempted to defraud the East India Company. He was hanged at Tyburn in 1783.
Very fine stipple and etching printed in a subtle red-brown ink on a wove paper.
Within a handsome period Hogarth frame with gadroon detail back edge and beaded sight edge. In an gilt elipse.
There maybe some reflections in the glass these are not faults.
Frame size approx: 17 ins. by 13 7/8 ins. (43 cm. by 35.3 cm.)
