A most beguiling portrait of Claire Stafford, the partner and muse of Ruskin Spear who wears a black dress with a red and white striped scarf and has her auburn hair loosely pinned up. Claire is should be noted was at one stage the keeper of tigers at London zoo.
The sitter stares out at us directly, from this sensitively rendered portrait and her gaze is at once disarming and also compelling.
Particularly of note are the use of bravura brushstrokes and thick impasto paint in the face and body, and also the soft pink textured background which throw these into sharp relief.
RUSKIN SPEAR ( 1911-1990)
Born in Hammersmith, Spear attended the local art school before going on to the Royal College of aArt in 1930. He began his teaching career at Croydon School of Art, and taught at the Royal College of Art from 1948 to 1975. Initially influenced by Sickert and the Camden Town Group, and the portraiture of the Euston Road School.
Spears work often has a narrative quality, with elements of humour and respectful satire. Because he used a wheelchair due to child polio, much of his work focused on his immediate surroundings, and heís especially known for his quirky case studies of domestic cats.
A retrospective of Spearís work was held at the Royal Academy in 1980. His work is represented in the Tate Gallery Collection.
