Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pricket candlestick is a traditional lighting fixture featuring a central spike at the top designed to hold a thick wax candle securely in place. Originating in religious and altar settings, many 19th-century examples were subsequently converted into electric table lamp bases.

These bases were carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso plaster, and finished with a reddish clay substrate known as bole. Gold leaf was applied and burnished over the surface, often accompanied by brass electrical components during later conversions.

Authentic 19th-century giltwood items feature water gilding that reveals red or grey bole underneath where natural surface wear has occurred. Look for hand-carved wood grain irregularities, slight gesso craquelure, and original joinery beneath the gilded finish.

Position the lamp base on a dark wood sideboard or console table to create contrast between the reflective gold surface and the background. Pair it with a plain silk or linen shade in a neutral tone to balance the carved classical detailing.

Giltwood and gesso surfaces are sensitive to moisture and chemicals, so cleaning must be restricted to light dusting with a soft, dry camel-hair brush. Avoid water, polish, or liquid cleaners, which can dissolve the water-soluble gesso binding beneath the gold leaf.
