Rosa Bonheur. An Exceptional Engraving...A Limier Briquet Hound / Fox Hound. Rosa Bonheur.
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:The Country House Gallery
In almost 40 years of dealing in antique prints I have not come across this one before and can''t find another for sale anywhere in the world. It is engraved by one of the best 19th century engravers, Joseph Pratt who was commissioned by Rosa Bonheur on many occasions to produce engravings of her paintings. Rosa Bonheur was one of the very best 19th century animal painters and we have several other engravings of her paintings in stock.
This particular engraving was published on 24th January 1884 by L. H. Lefevre, 1 King St., St. James London. Engraved within the plate on the bottom left is the name of the artist, Rosa Bonheur and two dated, 1847 and 1874. We can only assume the engraver got the 4 and the 7 the wrong way round and then had to correct it, 1874 being the date of the original painting. The engraving is an artist''s proof before letters on India paper and is signed in pencil in the margin by both Rosa Bonheur and Joseph B Pratt. It is re-mounted and presented in a 3 inch wide 19th century oak frame with original gilt slip. Both engraving and frame are in superb condition.
The dog portrayed is possibly a Limier Briquet Hound similar to one paintrd by Bonheur in 1856. A limer was a scent hound used in medieval times.
The image dimensions are 61cm x 48cm.
