Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1850s.

The lid opens to reveal a re-lined interior in a handsome hand-coloured marble paper. The tray lifts out to reveal the section below which in turn opens to reveal a leather lined writing slope, gold embossed; hence these are known as "double action writing slopes". To the back of the slope there is a central removable pen tray and each side a cut crystal inkwell (one with a rim chip). The top section opens to reveal a further section for the storage of letters, papers or stationery, there is an age crack to the base wood, which is common, not seen and mentioned purely for accuracy.
A superb and rarely found box in excellent condition, measuring 12" x 9" x 6" tall while closed.
