John Henry Henshall RWS 1856-1928.Painter of genre and historical subjects in oil and watercolour, the latter often very large, the subjects highly dramatic and full of sentiment.Educated at South Kensington Schools and RA Schools.Exhibited from 1879 at the RA,SS,RSW and elsewhere.Elected ARWS 1883;RWS 1897.His paintings were purchased by Birmingham Leeds,Hull,,Manchester,Bristol,Preston and Blackpool, for permanent collections.’Unwillingly to School’, signed watercolour, image size 26x18cms,framed size 45x38cms.This is a particularly charming example of the artists work showing two children, probably brother and sister ,trudging to school in the rain. The younger brother has a particularly petulant expression which many children can possibly relate to,especially if it is the first day of school.Original period frame.
