Description

These Tortoiseshell boxes (butter dish / Sardine dish) are a rare find, the body wrapped in antique tortoise / turtle shell, in this case in excellent condition.

It stands on four original feet and the top of the lid is topped with a figural finial in the form of a Tortoise or Turtle on a naturalistic base. The fittings are all silver plated and fully marked to the front below the shield shaped cartouche mounted on the front.

The cream stoneware interior still miraculously intact but shows age with all over crazing and a fine hairline.

Victorian in era, it dates to c.1880 and is in wonderful condition. 6" x 5" x 3 1/2" tall to top of finial or 5 1/4" to top of handle.
