Victorian Mahogany Library Bookcase

19th century
Description

Victorian mahogany library bookcase

This Victorian mahogany library bookcase was made circa 1860 in one of the best workshops of the period.

The cabinetmaker selected the best timber possible as price was secondary to quality when this was ordered.

The glazed top section with a pair of double doors that open to allow you to access the 4 adjustable shelves.

The base section with the well figured arched panel doors. These open to reveal a shelf and a large open storage space.

This bookcase not only looks magnificent, but it also will take a large collection of books.

Imagine how good this will look in your home and the admiring glances it will get.

We often overlook in the days of large removal vans and the diesel engine how much effort went into just moving furniture like this around the country.

This example would have been made in a London workshop and then transported to the suburbs by removal wagon. It may even have been crated and sent by locomotive to a far-reaching destination. The porters would load it onto the horse drawn removal wagon and then it would wind it’s slow way through the city to either the station or straight to the purchasers home where the professional classes were living.

140cms wide 55ins

238cms high 93 1/2ins

44cms deep 17 1/4ins

All Measurements are approximate, whilst we take care in measuring there may at times be a very slight difference.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
