A pretty and unusual pair of earrings from the Victorian period, c1870s. The earrings have four discs with lovely machine worked decoration to the front of each. These discs are actually made from gold coloured metal, though they have all the look of 9ct gold. Around the edge of each is a lovely 'cushion' of black enamel that has been decorated with little sections of gold wire giving the outside of the earrings a striped effect. The shepherds hooks to the back are, in fact, solid 18ct gold and are likely to be replacements to the originals. Jewellery that involved black enamel was particularly popular between 1861 and the 1880s due to a period of mourning from Queen Victoria for her beloved Prince Albert. These are a wonderful stylish design with an unusual look.
