Antique Georgian Silver Stilton Scoop

18th century
Description

A lovely example of an antique solid sterling silver stilton scoop, dating from the reign of George III. It carries the maker's mark of Samuel Pemberton and was assayed in Birmingham in 1802.

The scoop itself seems slightly flattened compared to others I have had in stock. There is a small surface 'crack' in the silver on the back of the scoop, just 3mm in length, highlighted in the photographs. This is detailed for accuracy only as it does not detract from what is an excellent antique almost 220 years old.

The bone handle is well attached and in good order.

Overall, a good, useful antique item from a very well-regarded silversmith.

Dimensions:

Length: 17cm

Width: 3cm.

Complimentary gift wrapping is available on request.

Post and packaging are free within the UK. Overseas buyers please e-mail for postage costs and please note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in late eighteenth-century Britain, the Stilton scoop was specifically designed to extract portioned cheese from the centre of a large, crust-bound wheel of Stilton during formal dining services.

These utensils typically feature a sterling silver or silver-plated scoop blade joined via a threaded collar to a handle carved from bone, ivory, mother-of-pearl, or hardwoods such as mahogany and rosewood.

Authentic pieces bear official British assay office hallmarks on the silver scoop blade, including the lion passant mark for sterling quality, a makers mark, a town mark, and a specific date letter corresponding to the Georgian reign.

An antique Stilton scoop can be styled functionally on a wooden charcuterie board during entertaining, or displayed decoratively on a dining room sideboard alongside period glass and tableware.

Hand wash the silver blade gently with mild soap and warm water, taking care not to submerge the organic handle, and polish the metal with a soft cotton silver cloth to prevent tarnish.
