Description

A fine English J & G Meakin commemorative pottery plate made for the New York Worlds Fair 1789 - 1939. The plate is transfer printed in blue on a white ground and has panels containing pavilions representing various of the participating countries around the edge. The centre of the plate shows a statue of George Washington whose 230th anniversary coincided with the opening of the 1939 New York World Fair which was also the 80th anniversary of the event. It was also 150 years after the founding of America signified by a portrait and crest to the rim of the plate. The plate has printed makers marks to the base.
Offered in good condition with glaze age crazing and a minor stained craze to the left centre of the plate.
