Antique Saphiret Silver Filigree Crucifix Brooch

Saphiret is an antique glass which was created by adding genuine gold to molten blue glass. Held up to the light, it morphs from a mocha/pink colour to a crazy blue glow - once seen never forgotten! Production of saphiret ended at the beginning of the last century when the price of gold rose and the glass became too expensive to produce so there's not a lot of it around.

This beautiful crucifix brooch (could easily be worn as a pendant) is likely French and has eleven stunning foiled saphirets, each approximately 5mm, with a slightly larger one at the centre.

The cross is silver filigree on a sturdy silver-plated metal frame, securing with a substantial C clasp. Genuine old saphiret is usually found in non-precious metal settings as, being glass, it was considered costume jewellery in the 19th century.

Also comes with a metal safety chain and pin, which are likely a later addition and can easily be unclipped if you prefer.

The stones are in very good antique condition; light surface wear but no visible chips or cracks. There are two places where a little of the silver filigree is missing.
