A superb oil on panel by highly regarded artist Edmund Bristow 1787-1876. The work painted on oak panel depicts an inn interior with two patrons playing cards. The interior is also represented in another work by the artist where it is located as the Turks Head, Eton. The quality of the painting is quite stunning particularly the figures and even the little dog sat at their feet. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition with some minor areas of craquelure. The work is signed to the lower right but it is not dated but looking at his similar works it would date to C.1845.
Edmund Bristow 1787-1876 was a sporting and animal painted who live in Windsor where he was patronised by the Duke of Clarence, later William VI, and by other members of the Royal family. He did exhibit for a brief period at the Royal Academy, showing 7 works between 1809-1829. He painted mainly sporting scene, animals, portraits, rustic genre and landscape. His style is more in the m...anner of Morland and Ibbetson than of the Victorian period. Bristow''s character was reclusive, and disliked patronage up to the point where he would refuse to sell works. This work bares on the reverse a wax seal most likely from a collector as I have seen it on other works and as such most have belonged to one of his few patrons.
The painting is mounted in a superb period gilt frame which is in great country house condition with some minor repairs and original gilding. The frame is contemporaneous to the painting but not the original, it does have a modern slip.
A rare work by a highly desirable early nineteenth century artist, with the look of a great country house.
Overall sizes in inches, including frame: 18 1/2 by 20 1/2
