1920 - 1940
For Sale by Art Deco World
Description

Larger than normal is this very stylish 1930's Art Deco porcelain ladies powder bowl in the form of a Pierrot with instrument. Beautifully painted facial features. Although we bought this in France we believe it to be German in origin. Moulded numbers underneath the base . Condition is excellent and free from damage. There is the odd blemish from the firing original to the piece but not anything noteworthy. This is a lovely piece either for the collector or for someone with discerning taste with multiple uses aside from its original intent.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 1920s and 1930s Art Deco movement, the classic French pantomime character Pierrot became a fashionable motif in decorative arts. European manufacturers frequently incorporated this melancholy clown figure into vanity items, boudoir lamps, and dressing table accessories.

Powder bowls from this period were predominantly produced in molded porcelain, earthenware, or pressed glass. Ceramic examples feature hand-painted overglaze or underglaze enamels to highlight decorative details such as costuming and facial features.

Authentic pieces usually display period-appropriate maker marks or country-of-origin stamps on the unglazed base rim. Additionally, genuine 1930s ceramics exhibit characterful hand-painted enamel nuances and subtle signs of age, such as natural glaze crazing.

A lidded porcelain bowl serves as a functional decorative accent on a bedroom bedside table or bathroom vanity surface. It provides ideal storage for small jewellery, keys, or cosmetics while adding period charm to modern dressing spaces.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush to clean intricate sculpted areas. If washing is necessary, use lukewarm water and mild soap by hand, avoiding abrasive sponges or chemical cleaners that could degrade delicate surface enamels.
