Description
Suzanis were made in many centres around Uzbekistan in the 18th and 19th centuries. But those made in Bokhara seem to have the finest quality and finesse. Here is a beautiful example with wonderful colours and drawing. The repeat lattice design is elegantly drawn and with a great sense of movement. Each of the fan-like flowers is different in a subtle way. The overall composition is striking yet harmonious. The condition is generally very good. Some damage to the linen background which has been conserved professionally. The embroidery is generally intact. Note the wonderful array of different stitches which gives a sense of three dimensionality. This piece probably dates from the first half of the 19th century. Professionally cleaned and lined.
