Fine Bokhara Suzani, Circa 1850, 2.25m X 1.65m

19th century
Description

Suzanis were made in many centres around Uzbekistan in the 18th and 19th centuries. But those made in Bokhara seem to have the finest quality and finesse. Here is a beautiful example with wonderful colours and drawing. The repeat lattice design is elegantly drawn and with a great sense of movement. Each of the fan-like flowers is different in a subtle way. The overall composition is striking yet harmonious. The condition is generally very good. Some damage to the linen background which has been conserved professionally. The embroidery is generally intact. Note the wonderful array of different stitches which gives a sense of three dimensionality. This piece probably dates from the first half of the 19th century. Professionally cleaned and lined. Ready for immediate use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Bokhara suzani is a hand-embroidered textile originating from Central Asia, historically crafted in regional urban centres such as Bokhara as decorative panels, bed covers, or dowry textiles.

Antique suzanis are typically created using silk thread embroidered onto narrow strips of hand-loomed cotton or linen cloth, which are stitched together before or after embroidery using chain stitch or couch stitch.

Authentic 19th-century suzanis feature vertical seam lines where individually embroidered fabric strips join together, slight pattern misalignments across seams, and natural vegetable-dyed silk threads.

A large suzani can be mounted on a frame as textile wall art, draped across the foot of a bed, or hung behind a sofa as a graphic focal point.

Keep the textile away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, mount it with acid-free support materials, and consult a professional conservator for cleaning rather than using standard washing methods.
