Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Naval daggers, often termed dirks, were carried by naval officers and midshipmen during the French First Empire era (18041815). They served both as personal defense sidearms in close-quarters naval combat and as standardized components of ceremonial military attire.

Period naval daggers typically features high-carbon steel blades, cast brass or bronze crossguards, and ribbed hilts carved from ebony, bone, or hardwood. Scabbards were primarily constructed of leather reinforced with brass mounts.

Authentic period pieces display hand-forged steel blades with natural patination, hand-engraved or cast empire motifs on the guard, and age-consistent wear on original leather scabbards. Look for period-correct construction methods without modern solder or mechanical screws.

An antique dagger is best displayed flat inside a glazed tabletop display case, mounted within a custom shadowbox frame, or arranged alongside historical volumes on a dark wood library desk or shelf.

Apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax to both the steel blade and brass fittings to protect against humidity and oxidisation. Avoid abrasive polishes on aged brass surfaces, and keep leather components away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
