This calm blue marine scene shows the Scottish island of Ailsa Craig which is in the outer Firth of Clyde ten miles off the Ayrshire Coast. It is a granite volcanic island from which "blue hone" microgranite has long been quarried to make curling stones.

James Aitken was a successful artist who enjoyed a long exhibiting career that stretched from the 1880s until the 1930s.
He was born in Newburgh Fifeshire. He travelled throughout the UK and Europe and often painted scenes on the Isle of Man.

He specialised in shipping and marine subjects.

He exhibited widely including: Royal Academy,
Royal Scottish Academy,
Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours,
Royal Cambrian Academy,
Royal Society of Artists Birmingham,
Manchester City Art Gallery.

The watercolour is in good condition.
It is presented in a new museum quality conservation cream mount within a good quality gilt wood 'swept' 20th century frame.
