Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tantalus is a wooden or metal frame housing two or three decanters, equipped with a lock and key mechanism that prevents access to the spirits while keeping them visible. Originating in the late nineteenth century during the Victorian era, it was designed to prevent domestic staff or uninvited guests from consuming liquor without permission.

Traditional tantalus sets feature cut crystal or heavy glass decanters set within a frame crafted from silver plate, solid brass, oak, mahogany, or walnut. The base sockets are often lined with velvet or felt to protect the glass from scratching and cushioning during movement.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate markings, such as silver-plate maker stamps or hallmarks on the metallic frame, along with original working lock mechanisms and matching hand-cut glass stoppers. Older glass decanters often show subtle hand-cutting irregularities and wear consistent with age around the base and collar.

A silver-plated tantalus serves as a refined focal point when positioned on a dark mahogany sideboard, a classic bar cart, or a gentlemans library bookcase. It pairs exceptionally well with crystal glassware, brass cocktail accessories, and rich wood finishes to create an elegant entertaining space.

Clean the glass decanters using warm water and mild soap, drying thoroughly to prevent water spots, while avoiding the immersion of the metal frame. Polish the silver-plated frame using a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish, taking care to avoid getting liquid polish on any velvet or fabric linings.
