Chinese Plate ‘Arbor’, Cornelis Pronk, C. 1738.

Description

Chinese porcelain plate, c. 1738, Qianlong Period. Hand painted in fencai enamels, with the ‘Arbor’ pattern, after a design by Dutch artist Cornelis Pronk.

The central panel with figures within a topiary garden scene, watching ducks on a river. Having a broad border of cartouches containing insects, flowers and fruit, interspersed with shells on a turquoise cell diaper ground.

Painted to the reverse with a continuous iron red and purple lambrequin border, around an unglazed footrim.

Medium: Porcelain

Height: 2.5 cm, 1”.

Width: 25.7 cm, 10 1/8”.

Condition: Typical minor wear to the enamels. No damage. No restoration.
