staffordshire pottery,antique light blue and white transfer printed dinner plates series ware,with back stamp titled italian scenery,made by john meir and sons,of greengates pottery,tunstall,staffordshire,active 1812-1897.the italian scenery series consists of at least 6 different scenic veiws and patterns of figures and architecture with idyllic landscapes often with cattle,sheep and goats,with an elaborate floral border with further landscape cartouches.The set of plates on offer date from about 1837 based on the J.M.S.backstamp,just at the beginning of queen victoria"s reign.This firm produced a good range of transfer printed earthenware at this period,much of which was exported outside of references.italian scenery series wares by meir are illustrated in A.W.Coysh and R.K.Henrywoods,blue and white printed pottery.1780-1880,pages 194-195.diametre of the plates.26cm.this type of staffordshire wares were used as ballast in the great trading masted ships of the day,the trans atlantic trade.17 plates available
