Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Canterbury is a low, portable wooden stand designed with internal vertical divisions, originally created in the late 18th century to store sheet music or folios. Named according to tradition after the Archbishop of Canterbury who commissioned the initial design, these stands frequently incorporate lower storage drawers and castors.

Victorian Canterburys were predominantly crafted from hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood. High-grade examples feature decorative burr veneers, pierced fretwork partitions, turned columns, and brass castors.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints in the base drawer, original brass or iron castors, and hand-carved or scroll-cut fretwork dividers. Natural age-related patination, unevenness in timber colouration from light exposure, and authentic timber shrinkage lines are key indicators.

In modern living spaces, a Canterbury functions as an end-of-sofa storage unit for magazines, newspapers, or art folios. Its compact footprint makes it suitable for placement in a reading nook, library alcove, or hallway beside armchair seating.

Walnut timber requires dust removal with a dry, soft cloth and occasional polishing using natural beeswax. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent veneer movement or fading of the natural grain colour.
