An exceptional and original antique wooden Tunbridge Ware box, possibly for games, made by Thomas Barton (1819-1903). This exquisite, versatile and well sized box has a hinged cover decorated with a cube work panel within a geometric mosaic border on an ebony ground. The cover opens to reveal the interior set with six partitions to either side of finely made lift out wooden box of long rectangular shape with the whole interior lined with patterned pink and gilded paper. The lower body of the box is decorated with a mosaic border of flowers and swirling leaves and the base has remnants of an original paper lining and label reading T Barton, Late Nye. The box also has its original key with working lock and has original compartment dividers.
Thomas Barton is one of the most sought after and recognised Tunbridge Ware makers and worked with Edmund Nye (1797-1863) one of the most acclaimed Tunbridge Ware makers. Barton became foreman and took the business over and the quality of his work became renowned.
An exceptional box in good excellent condition with rich bold colouring to the wood and a bright interior. One of the best we have seen with loss to the paper lining to the base and a couple of the internal partitions are loose.
