Antique Elgin railway pocket watch, 1887.

The watch has a 15-jewel stem-winding movement, grade 75, which is working nicely. The movement is fully signed, Elgin Ill, G M Wheeler. Certain Elgin grade numbers were also given names as a way of marketing the watches to their target audience, the G M Wheeler grade was used by Elgin for their ‘gentleman’s watch’. The serial number 2,293,108 dates it back to 1887.

The watch measures 58mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is white metal (unhallmarked although it has tested as being silver) and it is in good condition. The back of the watch has an image of a locomotive with detailing picked out in a rose gold wash.

The glass lens is in lovely condition.

The signed dial has a couple of nibbles to the edge but these are covered by the screw-on bezel. Otherwise the dial is in lovely condition. Blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.
