This is a unique original 1932 Charcoal/Pencil sketch attributed to:
L. S. Lowry 'Lawrence Stephen Lowry' (1887-1976)
The interesting image portrays Lowry's poorly Mother, bedridden during the early 1930s.
Lowry's professional working life was put on hold during this period in his life. He suffered from depression, mainly due to losing his Father and having the added stresses and strains of looking after his poorly, terminally ill Mother on a full-time basis.
The history surrounding the artist during the time this sketch was painted is an extremely intriguing read, and even more so because the period all appears to surround he's bedridden Mother, and at the same time, Lowry painted this sketch, of his poorly mother, in her bedroom.
Indeed, the final image of our photograph gallery depicts one of Lowry's 'Pendlebury, Bedroom' Oil paintings, in which clearly shows intricate details of the same bedroom which is portrayed in the sketch.
The new Movie, 'Mrs Lowry & Son', also depicts many, many features from this 1932 Sketch, and I would encourage anybody to watch the official movie trailer, as it will give you a better insight into the history of this rather personal, important sketch.
Purchased by us from a reputable Auction House, and catalogued accordingly ''Attributed to'' L. S. Lowry.
(Documentary proof of this is available upon request).
At the time of bidding online for the sketch, the auctioneer introduced 11 lots in particular, (all of which were coming from the same deceased elderly farmer's North Welsh estate) and the Lowry sketch was one of those lots.
The vendor's other 10 lots were all of the notable 20th Century artists, including sketches by Lucian Freud, Picasso and Andy Warhol, to name but a few.
The sketch includes multiple handwritten inscriptions on both the back and the front of the work.
Some of the text legible, and some of which we can not quite make out.
A list of the hand-written inscriptions which are easily legible are as follows:
1: 1932
2: Bedroom
3: 117
4: L. S. Lowry 1932
5: Other illegible inscription
1: L. S Lowry 1932 Pendlebury, C.....?, C......?
2: 29112 Kirkb..ry, Kilburn Gallery, London
3: N.F.S
4: 98527
6: 'Henry Biggot N.........?, Staff.......?
To summarise, this is a very special piece which we believe deserves far deeper research.
There are plenty of clues and plenty of leads which can be used via the various inscriptions!
In terms of any certified 'C.O.A' (Certificate Of Authenticity), there is, unfortunately, not a living person who is authorised to provide such a document for a work by Lowry.
To our understanding, in the past, one could, go to the Lowry Trust/Foundation and seek authentication for a Lowry work, however, apparently, the organisation came to the wrong conclusion on one or two Lowry works, and they have since had this authority removed from them.
With the above in mind, there will be differing opinions so some would suggest that it is not a sketch by Lowry, and equally so, there will be those that strongly believe that it is a sketch by Lowry.
There is no doubt in our minds that this is an original sketch by Lowry, depicting he's poorly Mother, in her bedroom at the home in Pendlebury.
There are too many personal attributions going on within this work that only Lowry and his family were privy to during the 1930's period when this sketch was painted.
There may one day be another authoritative figure who can confirm Lowry works, who knows! If there ever is again, and they rightly certify this piece as a Sketch by Lowry, it will put the piece financially into a different league!
