Early 18th Century Oak Longcase Clock By Blackburn Of Oakham, (county Town Of Rutland)
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Culvertons
Currently there are many antique longcase clocks for sale, however this example from the 1730''s is particularly attractive and impressive. The movement with its 10'' silvered brass dial was made by Stephen Blackburn of Oakham and has previously been expertly restored at cost of £ 1014.00 (commissioned and paid for by the clocks previous owner - the receipt is available). So, as would expect, the movement runs well and keeps very good time over an eight day period.
The excellent condition of the movement was certainly a factor in its favour when we were considering the purchase of this clock from a local estate. However, it was the case that really grabbed our attention. It has a lovely colour, full grain and really evokes its age and holds the viewers attention. The pillars to each side of the hood are turned from fruit wood; the glass has wonderful imperfections that reflect its age; the hinges and escutcheon to the main door are original; the trunk and hood are decorated with si...mple boxwood/ fruit wood banding and its original backboard is made from one glorious piece of sawn oak, which bares witness to its 300 years of history.
Restoration - the base of longcase clocks invariably fell prey to the damp conditions of the homes they sat in during previous centuries. Even though the ''boot'' (base) has undergone restoration, approximately 100 years ago, you can see both the cabinet maker and polisher carried out their task with care and expertise. The clock''s original base was kept but is now protected and surrounded by the Edwardian replacement you can see in the images.
The measurements supplied indicate the widest and deepest parts of the clock ie: the hood & base
A lovely clock that has drawn much praise during the short time it has been on show in our Dorking showroom.
