A Superb Quarter Chiming Early 9 Tubular Gong Figured Oak Longcase Clock by J.J Elliott c1890, In the early 1880s the firm J.J. Elliott, Ltd, of London manufactured massive hall clock movements of the highest quality. They were in at the start of a great resurgence of interest in longcase clocks in Britain. John Harrington of Coventry England patented a clock-chime of tubular bells in 1884 and had Elliott adapt these to the (Elliott) movements. Elliott produced movements for the next 40 years and were always the quality standard for the industry.
This clock is no exception to the highest of standards demanded by Elliott, the case is of the finest figured oak with shell and floral inlay to the door and base. The hood featuring double Corinthian pillars surmounted by a fine fretwork swanneck top. Unlike other later tubular gong clocks, this clock is of “normal” proportions instead of the over sized wide cases seen in later clocks.
The incredibly intricate and finely engraved brass dial with two subsidiary dials for strike/silence and sweep second is simply stunning being finished with finely blued hands
The typical substantial quarter chiming movement is of the early design having push-rod operated hammers connected via an “over-frame” to a side mounted pin barrel instead of the later width wide barrel on later models. The movement has been fully overhauled by me personally and comes with a full three year guarantee for your piece of mind..
The chrome/Rhodium plated tubular gongs have been tuned perfectly and sound from the Whittington tune is sublime.
An excellent opportunity to acquire an early J.J Elliott 9 tubular gong longcase clock of the highest standards..
