Charles Theodore Bichet (1823-1929) Oil painting

An early large work by the french impressionist painter Charles Bichet. He trained in Paris and exhibited at the Salons from 1903. He followed the impressionist style and panted with strong fresh colour as seen here. He painted many works in the Creuse and is closely linked to that school of painters.

Signed lower right

Provenance: Private French collection

Medium: Oil on original canvas

Size: c. 18 x 26 inches unframed / 23 x 31 inches framed

Condition: unlined and unrestored – very nice for age

Charles Théodore Bichet was taught by Lechevallier-Chevignard in the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1903, 1904 and 1905. He began teaching drawing in the City of Paris schools at the age of 20 and in 1890 was appointed to teach in the École des Arts Décoratifs in Limoges.

His early style was classical, but in 1903 he followed the Impressionists’ example and began to use clear, vibrant colours, as in Underwood; Bessines Church; Châteauponsac Church.
