“Acme Lever” Buren pocket watch for H Samuel.

The watch has a 10-jewel stem-winding movement, identified as a Buren, which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner fitted cover (this inner cover has lost its clip but it stays in position beautifully) and then also a hinged inner cover.

The watch measures 51mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is the gold plated Star model from the Dennison Watch Company, the company supplied cases for many watch makers. The case is in lovely condition, as is the nice thick watch glass.

The dial is signed “Acme Lever” together with the name of the original retailer of the watch, H Samuel of Manchester. The dial is in very nice condition with original hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute track.

In 1862 when Harriet Samuel took over her father-in-law's clock-making business in Liverpool, she renamed the business H Samuel and moved the business to Manchester's Market Street where she ran the company as a mail order business.

Later on, Harriet’s son concentrated on the retail side of the business, and the first H Samuel retail store opened in Preston in 1890, closely followed by branches in Rochdale and throughout Lancashire. Since then the company has become nationwide with branches in many British High Streets today.
