Description

Large mid 18th.c carved oak coffer c.1740. Five feet long and in solid oak throughout. Two plank top with particularly good colour and grain. Opening with the original iron hoop hinges to reveal plenty of storage space inside plus a small compartment at one end, the hinged lid of which makes a stay for the lid of the chest. Exceptional and original decorative carved front, the four panels carved with a repeated design of stylized flower heads and circles, note the lovely hobnail carving used to fill the smaller circles. Interlocking arch and leaf detail to the rails, mullions and stiles. Panelled sides with simple moulded detail and plain panelled back. Some earlier repairs, most obvious at the bottom of the rear right hand stile. Otherwise excellent colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
