This is a fantastic Victorian, copper electrotype plaque, c1890, showing 'The Triumph of Amphitrite'. In classical mythology, Amphitrite was a sea nymph and the wife of Neptune, god of the sea. Well represented in art of all kinds, this subject is sometimes called 'The Triumph of Neptune' as it was he who sent a cockle-shell sea chariot to carry his reluctant wife to him. Amphitrite’s cockle shell is drawn by hippocampi, or sea horses and it is surrounded by a retinue of Nereids (sea nymphs) and Tritons. The arch of drapery over Amphitrite’s head was also a common motif in depictions of sea goddesses by early artists and those carrying on representing the subject traditionally during later periods.
An electrotype is a copy of an image by the electrolytic deposition of copper on a mould - in art of this type usually one taken from sculptural relief to produce an exact facsimile. The process was invented in the late 1830s. In this example, the dramatic nature of the sea-horses, balanced against the wind-blown drapes adds to the general dynamics of the content. The detail is crisp and exemplary. Elkington and Co. produced many electrotypes from c1880, but this piece may well be French.
