An Early 16th Century Coin Chest.

16th century
Description

An early 16th century coin chest of heavy duty construction, made from thick cut oak planks and standing on chunky stiles. The single plank top having cleated ends with ironwork and four coin depositories, at either end of the top is two iron straps with a single large hole in each of them, these would have originally had large screw locks that threaded through the lid into the base. interestingly there is also old graffiti carved in the lid from the centuries and old dates 1775 , 1610 and the word Tron, there are also some indecipherable words.

The chest lid lifts up to reveal the untouched interior of four compartments which the coins would have been held. The original hinges are still present, however one of the locks is missing and there is no key for the existing lock.

There has been some rot and wood worm, along with restorations to the chest commiserate with age but overall it is in excellent condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
