Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 18th Century.
The 8-day movement retains its original verge escapement with fixed bob pendulum, whilst the 8-inch dial is engraved and silvered and signed: Starey, Royal Exchange, London. Fine deeply moulded cast bezel with lock.

JOHN STAREY is recorded working at the Royal Exchange, London from about 1770, becoming a Freeman of the Clockmakers Company in 1785, until his death in 1800.
The decoration of marquetry inlay to the ‘cushion-shaped’ trunk is certainly unusual and looks later though there are no signs that this decoration was added later. We are convinced the case is original and the marquetry itself has an 18th century Dutch look about it. Perhaps a special order at the time?
