Superb Rococo Antique French Ormolu Clock with Visible Pendulum by Emile Colin, Paris

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1870 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A stunning antique French clock, finely modelled in ormolu (finely gilded bronze). It is a beautiful Rococo balloon shape with boldly flamboyant acanthus legs hold the movement aloft. The original ormolu pendulum swings gently below. Above the dial is an elaborate 'C' scroll and stylised floral finial.

The dial is porcelain enamel with its original finely cut gilt brass hands and convex glass.

The French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip to hear the bell and watch the clock running!

Condition of the case is excellent, the gilding is beautifully clean and bright with some slight stains, discolouration and tarnish. The Emile Colin mark is on the top of the finial. The dial is also in excellent condition, just a small chip to the edge of the centre hole.

The bronze founder Emile Colin is listed in Tardy and Pierre Kjellberg, Bronzes of the 19th century.

Emile Colin worked in second half the 19th century for number of renowned artists, including Carrier Belleuse, Feuchère, Fratin, Pradier, Theodore Rivière, Mathurin Moreau, Mindron, and Charpentier. He sent a bronze clock and some marble vases decorated with bronze to the 1893 Chicago exhibition, in addition to some sculpture. The Colin foundry was located at 29 Rue de Sevinge, Paris in 1843, and then at 17 Rue des Tournelles from 1914.
