Description
'LES TROIS HARLEQUINS’ TITLED IN PENCIL BY THE ARTIST INK, WASH AND GOUACHE ANDRE ELBAZ BORN 1934 SIGNED AND DATED - Framed size 24 x 28.5 inches 61 x 73 cms Image size 14 x 19 inches 36 x 48 cms - This exuberant painting by Andre Elbaz ,of three harlequin musicians, uses his characteristic gestural brushstrokes and distortion of image. The subject of the harlequin was a favourite motif for Picasso who may have influenced Elbaz. - Andre Elbaz is a painter and filmmaker born into a Jewish family in Morroco. Elbaz studied art and theatre in Rabat and Paris from 1950 to 1961. His first exhibition, which was very successful, took place in Casablanca in 1961 and earned him an appointment as Professor at the Beaux-Arts school in Casablanca. In parallel to his career as a painter, Elbaz is also known as a filmmaker. He produced several short films in France, Canada and the United States. He combined his two passions into a new approach in art-therapy, which he developed with his wife who was a psychiatrist. He has exhibited around the world including in Europe, United States, Canada, Japan, Morrocco and Israel. Drawings related to the Holocaust were shown in an exhibition at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. He alsoexhibited in Tel Aviv. - A retrospective exhibition of his life’s achievements was held in 1990 at the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris. The provenance of this painting is not certain but it seems likely that it was offered by the Zwemmer Gallery in London which held an Elbaz exhibition in 1964. . The painting is in good condition with minor creasing. It has been re-mounted , using archival quality mount board, into its original exhibition frame. Ref 81343A Internal Ref: 81343A
