Aramis Antiques has dated this piece to the 1870s.
The carving is of exceptional quality, accuracy and technique. The main theme is an Arts & Crafts intertwining foliage design. But the background is formed of a plethora of tiny star shapes, much more refined and intricate than the bradall work typical of the late 19thC. The starry background creates the perfect foil for the main foliage design, the whole being reminiscent of the designs of William Morris. Truly stunning and unusual, even if just a humble magazine rack.
